How to create a relationship of trust with a teenager and become his ally 🫂

Adolescence is a period when a child can still be a child, but at the same time wants to feel like an adult. These sudden changes in behavior sometimes put parents at a standstill and create a sense of distance: children feel pressured and controlled, and parents feel misunderstood. However, it is at this point that the child needs support, not intervention. How to maintain trust and become an ally for a teenager?

1️⃣ Dialogue instead of criticism.
Teenagers often have many thoughts and questions. It is important to create a space for non-judgmental exchange of ideas. When they see that they are listened to and accepted without criticism, a sense of trust and openness grows.

2️⃣ Acceptance of emotions and personality.
Instead of saying, "Everything will pass," try saying, "I understand that this can be difficult for you." This will help the teenager feel that you are on his side, and he can be himself around you.

If you want your teen to share his feelings, be willing to share yours. Tell us about your day, current duties and projects, daily joys and failures.

5️⃣ Support, not control.
Being an ally means being supportive even when you disagree with a teen's decision. Make your points clear, but let your child go their own way when it's safe to do so.

It is important for teenagers to have models and role models, the opportunity to try and feel supported regardless of the results. Also, fairness, logic and consistency on the part of parents in demands, requests and decisions play a key role.
